There are widespread reports that the GP profession is facing a national recruitment and retention crisis. Growing pressures as a result of increased volume and intensity of their workload coupled with large numbers retiring and leaving the profession are some of the reasons contributing to the issue.
One Health Lewisham is seeking to address these national and local issues through our GP Retention and Recruitment scheme, which launched on Thursday 28th February. The scheme aims to increase the rate of GP trainee retention, attract new GPs and broaden the primary care workforce locally to take some of the burden from a limited pool of GPs.
GPs from across the borough came together for presentations and workshop activities to tackle the issues facing GP careers and opportunities. Dr Monica Aquilina, local portfolio GP gave the keynote speech and information was presented about later career options, portfolio working and the GP retention scheme.
